Dr. Michael Coroza

Michael M. Coroza, Ph.D., is a Full Professor at the Department of Filipino, School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, where he handles courses in Filipino Literature (History and Criticism), Creative Writing (Poetry), and Literary Translation at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He has held the Rev. Fr. Horacio de la Costa, SJ, Endowed Professorial Chair in History and Humanities at this university since 2012. It conferred on him the Rev. Fr. Henry Lee Irwin, SJ, Memorial Teacher Award for the Humanities in 2016.

A multi-awarded poet, essayist, and literary translator, Dr. Coroza received the Southeast Asian Writers Award (S.E.A. Write) from the Royalty of Thailand in 2007 and the Ani ng Dangal Award from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in 2009. He has won major prizes for his poems, essays, and stories for children in the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.

In 2019, the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) proclaimed him Kampeon ng Wika (Language Champion) in Literature and Translation. He is now on his third term as Chair of the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL or Writers’ Union of the Philippines).
